Worcester County, Massachusetts
Worcester County, also known as the "heart of New England", is centrally located to several major cities. It is approximately one hour from Boston, Providence, and Hartford, and three hours away from New York City. It offers fine hotels, first-rate restaurants, world-class arts, entertainment, and museums.
You may want to visit the American
Antiquarian Society (AAS) which is both a learned society and national research library of pre-twentieth century American history and culture. If you wish to see culture of even earlier in time you may want to visit the Fruitlands
Museum, which is a welcoming landmark for many visitors who are interested in seeing culture. It has a framed farmhouse, noted collections and a memorable landscape. It is one of the first outdoor museums in America. Patrons come to discover the stories, experiments and imaginings of the Alcotts, Shakers, utopians, artists and Native peoples. It truly is a cultural experience.
Nature lovers can enjoy hiking trails in beautiful parks and take longwalks in the gorgeous Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest urban sanctuary in New England. Urbanites will appreciate rich architecture, including breathtaking Union Station, eleven colleges and universities, Over 35,000 students at more than a dozen area colleges contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the city. Top-name entertainers are regularly featured at Worcester's Centrum Centre. Worcester´s landscaping has impressive mills and different types of architecture with neighborhoods oriented toward building the community.
It has one of the finest urban school systems in New England and one of the lowest crime rates in the country. Worcester is one of just two communities nationwide to be recognized as an "All-American City" a record five times, more recently in the year 2000. The estimated population in 2004 was 779,488. This was an increase of 3.80% from the 2000 census. Worcester has something for everyone and is a great place to make your home.
